The design of Dr. Shankar Shinde’s house in Lohegaon, near the airport in Pune, was a challenging task due to the limited plot size of 1800 sqft and the requirement for a 4BHK house, an IPD, and a small clinic. The primary focus was to ensure ample natural light and ventilation in the house to avoid a feeling of confinement. This was achieved through two key factors: a good floor-to-floor height and floor-to-ceiling openings on the northern and eastern sides of the house.
To incorporate natural light and ventilation, a meticulously designed façade was created, which included a combination of glass, louvers, and windows. The addition of a brown wooden texture to the façade gave it the appearance of a lantern from the outside.
While all the floors of the house have a floor-to-floor height of 11 ft, the living area was distinctly designed with a height of 14.7 ft, creating a double-heighted space. This arrangement also resulted in a small partially covered cozy terrace area on top, which is easily accessible by climbing half a staircase. The terrace can serve as a multipurpose space for various activities.
Due to the limited space, it was not possible to have a large landscape area. To overcome this constraint, green spaces were attached to every room externally. This not only provided a sense of having plants inside the room but also added to the overall aesthetics of the house
